“The Amazing Spider-Man” Will Be Released July 3, 2012

February 15, 2011

Yesterday, Columbia Pictures announced that the official title of the Spider-Man franchise reboot will indeed hearken back to the comic book title of “The Amazing Spider-Man” and revealed as well that the movie will open in theaters on July 3, 2012.

At the same time, the studio posted this new full-costume photo of the Spider-Man costume that will apparently be used in the movie. Thank goodness there are no signs of the “slippers” we saw in some of the unofficial photos taken during filming of action scenes in the streets a month or so ago (though admittedly the actual foot area is in shadows in this shot), but apparently the additional “racing stripes” connecting gloves to the shoulders will remain. There were similar stripes running from the boots to the waist area in production stills released earlier, but the pose in this shot makes it impossible to tell if those remain and additionally it can be seen that there is no red material or black webbing lines on the finger portions of the gloves. There are, however, mechanical web-shooters on the wrists which would seem to confirm the abandonment of the “organic” ones used in the previous three movies.

My personal opinion is there is more blue than I am used to seeing in Spidey’s costume and I’m not thrilled with the “racing stripes”, but overall I can live with it. I think long-time fans of the comic book like myself tend to “overlay” our own memory of the classic costume when watching these films anyway.
