Spider-Man #50 Splash Page by Romita Sells for $88,500

December 21, 2010

It is often recognized as one of the most iconic and defining moments in comic book history. It was the scene where Peter Parker, at one of the lowest points in his career as The Amazing Spider-Man, decides to quit and throws his Spider-Man costume into a trash can in an alley as he walks out in his street clothes. That page from Spider-Man #50 and aptly titled “Spider-Man No More” was drawn by the legendary artist John Romita, regarded by many as THE Spider-Man artist, and a few days ago this iconic page of original pencil art sold for $88,500!

I remember reading that book when I was 12 years old in 1967 and how powerful that page felt, just looking at it. Romita is such a natural master of composition that you cannot help but be mesmerized by the scene he crafted.

As a further testament to Romita’s talent, that comic book page was staged as a scene in the Spider-Man 2 movie.
